Can You Touch Up Gel Nail Polish? What to Do When Your Manicure Grows Out
Your gel manicure is still looking good. Mostly.
There’s a tiny chip on one nail, a little regrowth around the cuticles, and suddenly you’re wondering: can you touch up gel nail polish instead of starting all over again?
The short answer is yes, in some cases. Small chips can often be touched up at home, but significant regrowth, lifting or peeling usually means it’s time for a fresh manicure.

Can you touch up gel nail polish?
Yes, you can touch up Gel Polish when the existing manicure is still firmly attached to the nail and you’re dealing with a small chip or minor imperfection.
What you don’t want to do is paint fresh Gel Polish directly over an area that is already lifting or peeling. Once the product has separated from the nail, covering it won’t properly reattach it.
Think tiny fix, not manicure resurrection.
How to touch up chipped gel nail polish
One nail chipped while the other nine are still perfect? Annoying, but fixable.
1. Check the nail first
Before reaching for your Gel Polish, make sure the remaining product is still securely attached.
If you see lifting, peeling or a pocket where the gel has separated from the natural nail, skip the touch-up. That nail is better removed and redone properly.
If it’s simply a small chip at the tip or edge, you can move on.
2. Smooth the chipped area
Use a Nail File to very gently smooth the edge between the existing Gel Polish and the chipped area.
You’re not trying to file off your manicure. The goal is simply to remove any rough or raised edge so your touch-up can sit more smoothly.
3. Clean the nail
Wipe away any filing dust and thoroughly clean the nail with rubbing alcohol and a Touch-Up Pad.
Once the nail is clean, avoid touching the surface with your fingers. Oils on the nail can interfere with adhesion.
4. Apply your Gel Polish
Apply a very thin layer of your matching Gel Polish over the chipped area, keeping the product completely off the skin and cuticles.
Depending on the size and placement of the chip, you may get a more seamless result by applying a thin coat across the entire nail rather than trying to paint only the missing spot.
Cure for 60 seconds under the LED Nail Lamp.
If another thin coat is needed for even coverage, apply and cure again.
5. Finish with Top Coat
Apply a thin layer of Top Coat across the entire nail to bring back an even, glossy finish.
Cure for the full 3 minutes under the LED Nail Lamp for maximum shine.

Can you touch up gel polish at the cuticle?
Technically, you can add colour to visible regrowth, but we generally wouldn’t recommend treating it like a traditional “fill.”
As your natural nail grows, a gap naturally appears between your cuticle and the Gel Polish. Trying to simply paint Gel Polish into that space can create an uneven finish, especially once the manicure has been growing out for a while.
More importantly, proper Gel Polish application starts with nail prep. The newly exposed nail near your cuticle hasn’t gone through the same prep process as the rest of your manicure.
If the regrowth is starting to bother you, consider it your sign to remove the manicure and start fresh.

How do you hide gel manicure regrowth?
If your manicure is still in great condition and you’re simply not ready to remove it yet, nail art can buy you a little time.
A small design near the base of the nail can make regrowth feel intentional. Think a reverse French, a little metallic detail or strategically placed dots using a Dotting Tool.

A touch-up makes sense when the problem is small and the rest of the manicure is still firmly intact.
But if you’re seeing multiple chips, significant regrowth, peeling or lifting, it’s time.
