How to remove gel polish step by step
1. File off about 80% of the gel
Using the more abrasive side of the file, thin the gel down through the top coat and most of the colour, stopping before you reach the natural nail. Filing breaks the gel's seal so the remover can penetrate — it is the step that cuts soaking time the most. File the layers down evenly and never file the natural nail itself.
2. Protect your cuticles
Apply Cuticle Oil around the nail before soaking. Acetone is very drying; the oil creates a barrier that protects the surrounding skin during removal and helps the gel lift faster.
3. Wrap each nail
Saturate a Gel Removal Pad with Gel Removal Solution, press it onto the nail, and wrap the fingertip snugly in aluminum foil so the pad stays in full contact with the gel. Make sure the pad covers the entire nail plate.
4. Let the remover work for 10 to 15 minutes
Warmth speeds up the process: Heating Mittens, a warm towel, or simply resting your hands under a blanket all help the remover break down the gel. After about 10 minutes, check one nail — the gel should look wrinkled, lifted, or flaky.
5. Lift the gel away gently
Remove one wrap at a time and use the flat edge of the Gel Removal Tool to push the softened gel off the nail, working from the base toward the free edge with light pressure. If a section resists, do not force it — rewrap that nail for another five minutes. Forcing gel off defeats the entire purpose of soaking.
How long does gel polish removal take?
Plan for 15 to 20 minutes in total: two to three minutes of filing, 10 to 15 minutes of soaking, and a few minutes to lift the gel. Thicker applications, builder layers, or glitter shades can need an extra five minutes of soak time — filing a little more thoroughly up front is the best way to keep removal short.
Can I remove gel polish without acetone?
Not reliably. Gel polish cures into a hard, cross-linked film that water, oils, or non-acetone removers cannot break down. Methods that avoid remover altogether — peeling, biting, or prying the gel off — take layers of your natural nail with them. If you prefer to minimize acetone contact, file off more of the gel first (you can safely remove most of it with a file alone) so the soak is shorter.
Why does my gel polish peel off in one piece?
If your gel peels off easily, the manicure was not sealed to a properly prepared nail: usually skipped dehydration, oil left on the plate, or base coat touching the skin. It feels convenient, but repeated peeling removes nail layers and weakens the plate over time.
