What Is a Base Coat & Top Coat? What Each One Does for Your Manicure

They look similar. They’re both clear. And they sit on either side of your colour.
So, naturally: do you actually need both?
Yes. Base Coat and Top Coat may be the supporting characters of your manicure, but they have two very different jobs. One creates the foundation for your colour, while the other seals everything in and gives your finished manicure its shine.
Here’s what each one does, why they aren’t interchangeable and where they belong in your manicure routine.
What is a base coat?
A base coat is the first layer applied to your nails before colour.
Think of it as the foundation of your manicure. It creates the layer between your natural nail and your Gel Polish or Nail Polish, preparing the surface for the colour that comes next.
With a GELCARE gel manicure, Base Coat is applied after your nail prep and before your first coat of Gel Polish.
It may not be the most exciting bottle in your manicure kit, but skipping straight to colour isn’t the shortcut it seems.
What does a base coat do?
The main job of a base coat is to create the foundation your manicure needs before colour application.
For Gel Polish, it helps your colour adhere properly to the nail and gives you a smooth surface to work on. Proper application, along with good nail prep, also helps your manicure last.
With regular Nail Polish, Nail Polish Base Coat similarly creates the first layer of your manicure before colour.
Basically, if colour is the outfit, Base Coat is what makes the whole thing sit properly.
What is a top coat?
A top coat is the final layer of your manicure, applied after your colour.
While Base Coat works underneath, Top Coat works on top. It seals your colour and creates the finished surface of your manicure.
For GELCARE Gel Polish, Top Coat is also what gives your manicure that smooth, ultra-glossy finish we all know and love.
Colour gets the compliments. Top Coat deserves some credit.
What does a top coat do?
Top Coat helps seal and protect the colour underneath it while creating a smooth finished surface.
With Gel Polish, your Top Coat is applied after your final coat of colour and cured under an LED Nail Lamp. At GELCARE, we recommend curing Top Coat for a full 3 minutes for maximum shine.
For a regular manicure, Nail Polish Top Coat is applied over your final colour coat and allowed to dry completely.
Either way, it’s the finishing layer between your freshly painted colour and everything your hands are about to encounter.
What is the difference between base coat and top coat?
The easiest way to remember it is right in the names.
Base Coat goes at the base of your manicure, underneath your colour.
Top Coat goes on top, after your colour.
They’re formulated to perform different jobs within the manicure system, which means they shouldn’t be treated as interchangeable clear polishes.
Your order should always be:
Base Coat → Colour → Top Coat
Simple enough.
Can you use a top coat as a base coat?
We wouldn’t recommend it.
Even though Base Coat and Top Coat may look almost identical in the bottle, they’re designed for different stages of your manicure.
A Top Coat is meant to finish and seal your manicure, not act as the foundation between your natural nail and your colour.
If you’ve run out of Base Coat, consider it a sign to restock rather than improvise.
Can you use a base coat as a top coat?
Same answer: we wouldn’t.
Base Coat is designed to sit underneath your colour. It isn’t intended to provide the same finished surface and shine as a Top Coat.
For the best results, use each product where it was designed to go.
Some things simply aren’t meant to multitask.
Do you really need a base coat and top coat?
If you want to follow the complete manicure system, yes.
It can be tempting to think of Base Coat and Top Coat as optional extras, especially when the colour is the part you’re actually excited about. But your manicure is a system, and each layer has its own role.
That’s especially important with Gel Polish, where the products and curing steps are designed to work together.
The few extra minutes are worth it.
How to apply base coat and top coat with Gel Polish
If you’re doing a GELCARE gel manicure at home, here’s where each step fits.
1. Prep your nails
Before applying any gel, properly prep the nail plate. Push back and clean the cuticle area, shape your nails and make sure the nail plate is clean and free of oils.
Once your nails are prepped, avoid touching the nail plate with your fingers.
2. Apply Base Coat
Apply one thin coat of Base Coat to one nail at a time, keeping the product off your skin and cuticles.
Immediately set each nail under your LED Nail Lamp for 5 seconds. Once all five nails have been set, cure the full hand for 60 seconds.
Your Base Coat may feel tacky after curing. Don’t wipe it. That sticky inhibition layer should remain in place for your colour application.
3. Apply your Gel Polish
Apply your chosen Gel Polish in thin, even coats.
We generally recommend three thin coats of colour, curing for 60 seconds after each one.
Again, don’t wipe away the tackiness between coats.
4. Apply Top Coat
Once you’re happy with your colour, apply a thin, even layer of Top Coat.
Cure for 3 minutes for maximum shine.
After the full cure, any remaining tackiness can be wiped away with rubbing alcohol.
And there she is.
What about base coat and top coat for regular Nail Polish?
The same basic order applies to a traditional manicure:
Base Coat → Nail Polish → Top Coat.
After prepping your nails, apply one thin coat of Nail Polish Base Coat and allow it to dry for approximately 3 to 4 minutes.
Follow with two coats of your chosen Nail Polish, allowing at least 2 minutes of drying time between each coat.
Finish with Nail Polish Top Coat and let your manicure dry completely.
Unlike Gel Polish, regular Nail Polish doesn’t cure under an LED lamp. It dries through exposure to air, so give those layers time to set.
Base Coat vs. Top Coat: the bottom line
They may both be clear, but Base Coat and Top Coat are not the same thing.
Base Coat starts your manicure and creates the foundation for your colour. Top Coat finishes it, sealing everything underneath and creating that polished final surface.
One goes first. One goes last. Colour gets to have all the fun in between.
